At the end of September – after the completion of the archaeological excavations at St. Nedelya Square, Sofia Municipality announced a competition for the development of a conceptual architectural and urban planning project for the square. The transformation of St Nedelya Square aims to turn it into a center of a new cultural space where archaeology and modernity can be successfully combined. The square which has cultural layers investigated by the archaeologists will become a continuation of Ancient Cultural and Communication Complex Serdica in the Largo. The existing cultural and spatial identity of the area will be preserved. The projects will have to be handed in at the Architecture and Urban Planning Directorate till October 18 and on December 20 the selected candidates will receive their invitations to participate.
We will learn more about the suggested ideas and how St Nedelya Square will become an attraction for both residents and tourists at the end of the year – in December. Sofia will most certainly continue to uncover more of its charm of an ancient and modern city that grows but does not age.
