Description
The Central Synagogue is the only Jewish place of worship in Sofia. The Synagogue houses the offices of the Central Israeli Spiritual Council. There is also a small museum on the second floor.
Historical Information
The construction of the Synagogue in Sofia began on November 13, 1905. After four years of construction, financial crises and debates in the community, the Synagogue was completed and officially opened on September 9, 1909. It was designed by Friedrich Grünanger. It is the largest synagogue on the Balkans and the 3 rd -largest in Europe (after the ones in Budapest and Amsterdam), as well as the largest Sephardic synagogue on the continent. The big central chandelier in the Sofia Synagogue is the pride of the building. It was made in Vienna and weighs 1700 kg.
