“A world gone mad...”

Sofia City Art Gallery presents the exhibition “A world gone mad...” - 110 years since the declaration of the Balkan War and 140 years since the birth of Vladimir Dimitrov – Maystora.
The exhibition will run from February 22 till May 29, 2022. The story of the Balkan War is preserved thanks to archival and museum funds, documents, diaries, letters, photos, paintings, poems, books and periodicals, which recall the history and exploits of those generations of Bulgarians who sacrificed their lives in the name of national values, unity and a bright future. Many artists from different generations are either called upon or enlist as volunteers, inevitably linking not only their lives but their creative work with the Balkan War, as well as military art and the historical painting genre later on. Some of them are professors at the National Arts Academy or high school teachers, others have just completed their art degrees in Sofia and other European capitals, and the remainder are yet to pursue a degree.
Apart from paintings and graphics, sculptural works dedicated to the war can also be found. Young sculptors Ivan Lazarov, Angel Spasov, Anastas Dudulov and Yanko Pavlov are involved in the Balkan War, with Ivan Lazarov being the only one with a complete and consistent series of sculptures, namely They’ve Won, On a Knife Edge, At the Watering Hole, Superpowers and others. The National Museum of Military History’s funds have the richest collection of works by artists who participated in the wars. Some of Vladimir “The Master” Dimitrov’s war-related works are stored at the Kyustendil Art Gallery. The National Art Gallery’s collection also houses some of the best examples of military art. Works related to the Balkan War, albeit fewer in numbers, including singles, can be found around collections of art galleries in the country – Varna, Plovdiv, Ruse, Stara Zagora, Sliven, Kazanlak, Kardzhali, the State Archives Agency, and some in private collections. The project comes to fruition in partnership with The National Museum of Military History and Kyustendil’s Vladimir “The Master” Dimitrov Art Gallery. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog and a collection of documentaries owned by the Bulgarian National Film Library, the Bulgarian National Television, as well as Venelin Shurelov’s multimedia project Vladimir “The Master” Dimitrov: Light and Spirit, realized in 2014 as commissioned by the 13 Centuries of Bulgaria Fund.
The visits to “The war! A world gone mad...” exhibition will be fully compliant with all current anti-epidemic measures.
Sofia City Art Gallery is located in Sofia, on 1, Gen. Gurko Str.

DECHKO UZUNOV. DIALOGUES IN THE STUDIO

Dechko Uzunov Art Gallery presents the exhibition Dechko Uzunov. Dialogues in the Studio. October 2021 – May 31 2022
For more than 10 years, the art studio of one of Bulgaria’s greatest artists and intellectuals, Dechko Uzunov, was not accessible to the public. There is already the opportunity to glimpse into the artist’s world and feel the atmosphere in which he created his art. Dechko Uzunov spent the last years of his life in his studio.
The theme of venues where Dechko Uzunov created his artworks is elaborated on in the exhibition Dechko Uzunov. Dialogues in Art presented at the gallery adjacent to the studio. Through the years, Uzunov’s teaching and diplomatic assignments turned this venue into a place where the artist managed to strike a balance between his personal space and social life.
Artworks presenting models at the studio reveal the many dialogues the artist had with himself and his students. Dialogues about the personal and the social, and, not less importantly, about art and reality.
This exhibition features works belonging to the permanent collections of Dechko Uzunov Art Gallery, Sofia City Art Gallery, Nikola Marinov Targoviste City Art Gallery, Kazanlak City Art Gallery and private collections.
Dechko Uzunov Art Gallery is located at 24 Dragan Tsankov Blvd, Sofia. Gallery hours: Wednesday-Sunday: 11 am – 7 pm. Free entrance.

The artist’s idea thus runs as a thread through the entire exhibition, with various short poetic narratives developing around it.
In the space of Vaska Emanouilova Gallery, the artist works with the permanent exhibition of Vaska Emanouilova’s artworks, and with the portraits of children in particular. They represent an aspect of the artist’s work that is less frequently featured in exhibitions and less explored by art experts.

It is his work among representatives of our society who live in severe social and domestic conditions or lead a life on the street that determines his photographic interest and choice of subject matter.

REALITY AND MYSTICISM

Sofia City Art Gallery (SCAG) presents the exhibition REALITY AND MYSTICISM
An exhibition within the framework of The Other Eye Project. 27/04/2022 - 10/07/2022.
Sofia City Art Gallery is located at 1 Gen. Gurko str, Sofia.
The Other Eye is a SCAG project presenting periodically exhibitions designed and curated by non-art historian outside curators who select works from the gallery’s permanent collection to create thought-provoking art projects of their own. For its new exhibition under the project, the gallery has invited as curator Georgi Voynov, an economist and longtime contemporary art collector.
Georgi Voynov focuses on the charitable donation of artworks, as well as on the reality and mysticism in the works of specific artists belonging to the genres of graphic arts and sculpture.
The exhibition presents four notable Bulgarian graphic artists and their view of the world. The artworks featured in the exhibition are characterized by thematic and genre (printmaking and sculpture) diversity, yet they have one thing in common, namely all of them have become part of the permanent collection of the Sofia City Art Gallery through charitable donations. The exhibition features 82 graphic artworks and 15 small-scale sculptures created by artists belonging to different generations, with differing aesthetic views, philosophies of life and means of expression.
The exhibition features artworks handpicked by the artists who created them to be added to the SCAG graphic arts and sculpture collections as charitable donations, as well as artworks presented to the gallery by the heirs of renowned Bulgarian artists.
Veselin Staykov and Preslav Karshovski seek their themes in the real visible world. With Rumen Skorchev and Nikolay Maystorov eternal parables and sentimental memories are enveloped in mysticism and related to imaginary creatures and situations. The rough mark left by life reflected in Margarita Radeva’s ceramic portraits contrasts with the soft plastic shapes of Margarit Tsanev’s miniature sculptures thus blending these artworks with the graphic artworks presented in the exhibition.
Looking back at the collections donated to the SCAG, this exhibition shows appreciation and respect for donors for their noble gesture which is commensurate with the artistic merit of the donated artworks. Charitable donation of artworks is a matter of personal choice, yet it has a great social impact and significance.

BEING DIFFERENT IS A PRIVILEGE

Kvadrat 500 National Gallery presents the exhibition BEING DIFFERENT IS A PRIVILEGE. 14/05/2022 - 26/06/2022
BEING DIFFERENT IS A PRIVILEGE presents the achievements of creatively therapeutic workshops in ceramics, and materializes a part of the inner world of people with autism that often remains inaccessible to others. And it is just as beautiful as their pure and unfeigned intentions, which have found expression in the forms and objects they have created.
The space housing the ‘New Prospects Through the Arts and Crafts: Art and Jump’ Centre in Sofia is filled with a particular mutual warmth, sharedness and trust in welcoming children, youths, parents, friends, and like-minded people. In the ceramics, textile and dance ateliers, the center’s team has, since 2010, been conducting training sessions and alternative therapies. In 2013, dedicated parents and professionals set up the Foundation for Assistance to People with Developmental Disabilities, whose credo relates to an understanding that each person is unique and has the right to happiness and equal opportunities in achieving it.
Compassion, tolerance, and empathy do not come about by means of laws, but germinate and grow in people’s hearts and souls. Doing good, volunteering and charitableness stimulate the tireless work to perform kindnesses.
