Description
Its making was assigned on the occasion of the new millennium and was the deed of sculptor Georgi Chapkanov. Since 2000 the statue has been rising on one of the key sites in the capital city, thus adding a finishing touch to the ensemble of buildings in the downtown part. It figures a young woman with a crown in the form of a fortress, holding a laurel wreath in her right hand, and an owlet, the symbol of wisdom, in her left hand. Thought of as a patron symbol of the city and a guardian of the country, she emanates grandeur, peace and beauty. Next to the statue is Serdica 1 and Serdica 2 metrostations, the Church of St Petka Samardzhiyska (14th century), St Nedelya Church (1460) – The Cathedral of Sofia Metropolitan, Sofia Synagogue (1909), Banya-Bashi Mosque (16th century) and the Catholic Cathedral of St Joseph (2006).
