The Pilgrimage - a Different Kind of Experience

Since 2010, with a break in 2020, every year Sofia Tourism Administration, Sofia Municipality, and the Faculty of Theology, Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, with the blessing of the Holy Metropolis of Sofia, have organized four pilgrimags, which lead to some of the most iconic monasteries in the Sofia Holy Mount.

In June, two one-day pilgrimage tours are held. On June 10 - Ascension of Jesus - from the church of Sts Constantine and Helena in the village of Lozen., to the Lozen Monastery of St. Spas and on June 21, on the feast of the Holy Spirit, the pilgrimage from St St Kirik and Julita Church in the town of Bankya to the Divotina Monastery of the Holy Trinity.

In the heat of summer, from August 1 to August 6, the Rila Miracle Maker Pilgrimage is held. It starts from the church of St. Sophia in the capital, and the ultimate goal is the Rila Holy Monastery. The pilgrims follow the route that the carriers of the relics of Saint John of Rila walked in 1469, crossing three mountains - Vitosha, Verila and Rila. On the sixth day they enter the Rila Monastery to worship the relics of St. John of Rila.

The Intercession of the Theotokos Pilgrimage takes place from St Petka Church in Kremikovtsi, Sofia to the Monastery of St. George on October 1- the feast of the Intercession of the Theotokos.
