80 years since the Construction of the National Library was Launched

Tuesday, 05 March 2019

This March we mark 80 years since the construction of St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library was initiated. It is the largest library in the country and the oldest cultural institute in post-liberation Bulgaria. It is also one of the most iconic buildings in the capital. The library is in the center of the city, next to the central building of Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski. In 1978 it was declared a monument of culture of national importance. It was built in a park environment and was designed by the great Bulgarian architects Tsolov and Vasilev. The library is one of the most impressive buildings in Sofia. Above the reading rooms there are roof lights, and the facade is lined with Vratza stone. Everything has been preserved. The furnishing is sophisticated and in line with the functions of the building. The National Library performs the functions of collecting, processing, organizing, preserving and providing printed and other works issued on the territory of the country. In its 140-year history, our largest public library has recorded the names of a lot of remarkable public figures who dedicated their lives to the enlightenment of people.
