At the very beginning of 2019 Sofia Metro received a special recognition award for the best public transport service. The certificate was awarded by the EU Business Awards. Only a year ago, at the special edition of Infrastructure Bulgaria Awards 2018 Sofia Metro was voted The Most Successful Infrastructure Project of the Decade 2007-2017. It was also the winner at the 5th edition of the Region's Accessibility Competition in 2015 when the candidacy of Sofia Municipality: “Sofia City Metro - accessible to everyone”, received an award of the Secretariat of the Council of Europe in a competition for accessible urban environment.
Undoubtedly, the subway is the best and most environmentally friendly means of transport. Sofia strives for green and sustainable development and thus has been expanding the subway network over the past years. 30 kilometers of rails have been constructed for the past 10 years. Currently, 12 km of the third line are being built. By the end of 2019, the first 8 km of the third line will be ready – from Vladimir Vazov Blvd. in Poduyane district to Krasno Selo passing through Oborishte, Orlov Most, the city center, the National Palace of Culture, Aleksandrovska Hospital. In the first half of 2020, the second stage - 4 km long with 4 metro stations - will also be inaugurated (from Krasno Selo through Ovcha Kupel to the Ring Road in Gorna Banya quarter). With the construction of the third line, the harmful emissions will be reduced by 90,000 tons.
