Sofia is building a Healthy Corridor

At the end of January, Sofia Municipality launched the project Regeneration and Integration of Unattractive Urban Areas through Social and Environmental Nature-Based Solutions (URBiNAT – URBan-Innovative-NATure). A Healthy Corridor in the capital funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Program is planned to be built.

Focused on the regeneration and integration of urban areas through the implementation of environmentally friendly solutions in four areas: energy, water, nature and food, URBiNAT aims at improving the urban environment by designing and implementing a Healthy Corridor - a nature-based innovative structure.

There are two other leading cities in this project - Porto (Portugal) and Nantes (France), while the cities of Brussels (Belgium), Høje-Taastrup (Denmark), Siena (Italy) and Nova Gorica (Slovenia) act as followers. Coordinator of the project is the Center for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra, Portugal. The University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodes is the academic partner of Sofia Municipality. The program provides each leading city in the project - Porto (Portugal), Nantes (France), and Sofia, with means for the realization of eco-friendly urban solutions in a selected urban area. In Sofia the project will be carried out on the territory of Nadezhda District. The aim is for the health corridor to connect Severen Park with the smaller parks and bicycle lanes, and the project includes the mineral waters in the area as well.
