The Palace, branch of the National Art Gallery, is housed in the building of the Royal palace. Temporary exhibitions of Bulgarian and foreign art are on display in its halls. Today, two cultural institutions with rich and valuable collections of fine art and Bulgarian folklore – The Palace branch of the National Art Gallery and the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum, operate on the premises of the Royal palace.
The National Gallery is the biggest art museum in Bulgaria. Its collection has over 42 000 art works from Bulgaria, Europe, Asia, America and Africa. Its branches are: Kvadrat 500 (luxury exposition), The Palace (temporary exhibitions), Museum of Christian Art, in the Crypt of the St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (thematic expositions), Sofia Arsenal – Museum of Contemporary Art (temporary exhibitions), Museum of Socialist Art (thematic expositions), the House Museums of Nikola Tanev and Vera Nedkova.
