Description
By the beginning of the 4th century AD Serdica’s streets underwent major alterations: their size, including that of the main ones, was reduced to accommodate demand for more living space. Quite a few small public bath houses were erected, too. The most eloquent example of that drift is the construction of the Balneum, today known as St George Rotunda. Elaborately designed residential complexes, equipped with separate bathrooms and mosaic-decorated halls, were put together in Serdica’s south-east quarter. As likely as not, these same buildings were used to cater to the needs of the emperors on their multiple visits to the city.
